Movie trailer analysis - No Good Deed

When watching the trailer for no good deed it is evident that the director, producer, and star names are given, not quite towards the beginning but more so towards the end. We see the production logo/company near the beginning of the trailer. The opening scene of the trailer is introduced with the cinematography of an over the shoulder shot followed by a blurred mid shot and slow motion shots. Moreover,we notice that there are no proper voice overs in this trailer most of the voices comes from the actual scenes of the movie. Voice overs have been as old fashion and outdated this could be the reason why this trailer does not have any.Even without the voice over the trailer manages to give the viewers a clear understanding or idea of what type of film film no good deed is through the narrations of scenes put in chronological order. The use music is parallel with the actions. The music is tensed and causes a sense of discomfort which reflects the mood the characters, the music starts of steady, the music gradually starts to increase in pace which conveys danger and fear. At exactly 0.55 second we hear a high pitched tone, this gives off an awkward feel for the viewers creating suspense indicating that something extraordinary is going to set off, this specific pitch of sound warns the viewers or gets the viewer anxious about what will happen next. There are three distinctive sounds, this makes it obvious and clear to what the director wants the viewers to notice, most of the time they are normally the best highlights of the film. In addition the use of non diegetic sound of the gun loading implies death.

I believe that this trailer is well edited this is because of the good use of continuity editing and seamless transitions. The use of montage editing compresses time and conveys a lot of information in a relatively shot period. The use of jolty transitioning reflects the genre of the film which is crime and thriller. The use of snappy short cuts compliments the action. The shot reverse shot allows the audience to examine the characters. Through the use of shot reverse shot we see that the male character Idris Elba has the weapon of a gun shoved at the back of his jeans, this is emphasis by the use of zoom, this suggests that this character is villain. The use of dimed lights sets a sinister mood. Furthermore the narrative of the trailer automatically does a good job as it enlightens the audience on who the villain, the princess and the helper. It is notifiable the princess (Taraji P Henson the character that needs saving) has an intruder in her house that shes trying drive out ,the trailer gives of the impression that there is a helper that's on its way, we assume this when we see a friend who realised the intruder and tries to do something about but horrifyingly ends up being killed by the villain. In my opinion I think that the trailer gives away too much of the thriller scenes. It doesn't leave the audience as surprised to see those scenes again because they have already seen them.

Consequently through the use of Mise en Scene we notice that the women is wealthy because the large house that she lives in. It is evident to see that the women was a mother and a house wife, she was wear no make up putting emphasis on how exhausted she looked, which is stereo typically how mothers look when left alone to look after their child/children. From The mother's facial expressions she tends to frown her eye brows along with her mouth opened in shock, implies that she
grave and distress. The use of low key light produces sharp contrasts of light and dark areas. The villain's choice of colour in clothing contradicts his real identity and the type of man he is, the main colour scheme is denim. The colour denim subverts to the colour a stereotypical villain would wear. Villains normally go for dark clothing rather that mild colours. The villain (Idris) wears a brown shirt inside his denim jeans jackets, the slight touch of the colour brown could suggest there is something wrong with the villain that tries to claim to be a harmless man. This film is targeted the demographic of young adult because of how much aggression and violence that the film consists of. Lastly the I am of the opinion that the Film doesn't have a huge unique selling point, but the story line can be seen as strange which does sometimes attract viewers to watch the film.

In conclusion the trailer uses a lot of film making techniques such as cinematography, editing, Mise en scene and sound in order to make an effective trailer.
